Synod Hall, Vatican City —The Blue Chip Foundation’s Initiative: Founder Jennifer Stengaard Gross represented the Blue Chip Foundation. Together with city mayors from around the world, they addressed two critical issues: modern slavery and human-induced climate change. Shockingly, more than 45.8 million people are trapped in some form of slavery, with 168 million children engaged in labor. The illegal profits from this exploitation amount to a staggering $150 billion annually. Pope Francis has consistently called for communities to reject all forms of human slavery. Additionally, the foundation recognizes that climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, and they are committed to taking steps to mitigate the damage already done.
City Mayors’ Declaration: Mayors from various countries—including Croatia, Jamaica, Italy, Brazil, the U.S., Canada, Nigeria, and France—came together to issue a joint declaration. In this core moral space, cities play a vital role. They uphold the inherent dignity and social responsibility of every individual, emphasizing the common good of all humanity. Furthermore, they appreciate the beauty and wonder of the natural world, recognizing it as a precious gift entrusted to our common care. Their commitment is clear: stewardship over ravaging. They aim to create socially inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban settlements.
Sustainability at the City Level: Jennifer Gross expressed newfound respect for mayors’ enthusiasm toward ethical solutions. She believes that true sustainability can only be achieved city by city because national governments often fall short. The group of mayors pledged to end abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of modern slavery, considering them crimes against humanity. Their collective goal is to transform cities and urban settlements into socially inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable environments.
Cities and Climate Change: Approximately 60% of the global population lives in cities. These urban centers are responsible for about 70-80% of global energy production. However, they are also the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. For instance, the Berlin Senate has set an ambitious goal: to make the city climate neutral by 2050. Berlin recognizes its responsibility as a European capital and aims to be a frontrunner in climate protection and energy policy.
Governor Brown’s Perspective: California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., emphasized the urgency of addressing both climate change and human exploitation. He sees this unprecedented gathering of global leaders as a wake-up call. It’s about the future of humanity—how we live, treat one another, and care for the natural world. The stakes are high, and the need for action is clear.
This event underscores the critical role that cities play in shaping a sustainable and just future for all.
