Sustainable Development Goal #6 Clean Water & Sanitation
Ensure access to water and sanitation for all
Water is vital for life. Every person shares the need and right to access safe drinking water and sanitation. Significant health problems are caused by inadequate sanitation infrastructure and contamination from wastewater discharge. Water scarcity impacts more than one third of the global population in areas where demand cannot be sustained with freshwater renewable sources.
Improvements in sanitation infrastructure and management, investment in water research and development, and government accountability by civil society organizations will that ensure sustainable water goals are achieved.

Why It Matters

The spread of disease from contaminated water and poor hygiene is a major cause of death among children under the age of five. Access to safe water is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and preserving biodiversity. The sustainable production of food and energy enables continued economic prosperity. The inclusion of women, children, and indigenous peoples in water conservation initiatives will ensure meaningful action towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
