Sustainable Development Goal #9 Industry innovation and infrastructure
Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
Manufacturing and infrastructure are the foundation of healthy economies. Lack of access to basic services such as electricity, sanitation, and information presents major obstacles to progress. Investment in transportation, information, and other services enhance access to education, health care, and sanitation. Livelihoods improve with advancements in air and freight services. Research and development of new technologies create efficiencies in manufacturing. Comprehensive communication networks facilitate the spread of information.

Why It Matters

In developing countries, lagging industrialization reduces job opportunities that promote more resilient communities. Agriculture is a significant source of employment in the developing world; introducing industrial processing will support more efficient food production at lower costs. Sustainable energy production, especially in isolated areas, depends on innovative technologies to harvest local sources of renewable energy.
