Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
Population growth is creating enormous challenges for cities in which half the world’s population resides. Urbanization requires better planning and management policies to promote commerce, culture, social development, and prosperity that are essential characteristics of thriving economies. Urban sprawl challenges sustainable development and threatens large much of the population with natural disasters. Cities are responsible for fostering innovative approaches to improving people’s lives. Intelligent planning must be prioritized to accommodate ongoing rapid urban growth.

Cities are experiencing rapid growth from an influx of inhabitants. In the developing world, urban expansion is increasing at higher levels without adequate planning. Combined, these factors are causing traffic issues, increased emissions, and the rise of slums that contribute to lower productivity, greater instability, and lower life expectancy. Inequalities prevent individuals from accessing basic services including healthcare and education that would otherwise lead to a decent quality of life and shared prosperity.
