All countries should benefit from fast-moving ICT revolution, urges UN

The challenge of the digital divide needs to be addressed if Sustainable Development goals are to be obtained.

A recent report from the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU) underscores the transformative potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve billions of lives. It highlights the revolutionary advances in technology, such as the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, and AI, which have the power to significantly contribute to sustainable development and make the world a better place. However, the report also warns about the persistent digital divide that leaves many people, especially in poorer countries, at risk of being left behind. This divide remains a significant challenge that needs to be addressed to ensure equitable access to the benefits of these emerging technologies.

Despite overall progress, the digital divide continues to be a major issue. Least developed countries lag behind on key indicators that influence their position in the digital economy, such as having the lowest numbers of internet users. For instance, Mauritius, the best-performing African country, ranked 75th on the ICT Development Index with a score of 5.88. This disparity highlights the need for targeted efforts to bridge the gap and ensure that all countries can benefit from technological advancements.

To harness the benefits of ICTs, countries need to create the necessary conditions and infrastructure that allow next-generation networks and services to thrive. This includes adopting policies that foster innovation while mitigating risks to information security, privacy, and employment. The report emphasizes that these efforts are crucial for both developed and developing countries to fully leverage the potential of ICTs.

The ITU report is recognized as the most authoritative source of data and analysis on the state of global ICT development. It is extensively relied upon by governments, international organizations, development banks, and private sector analysts and investors worldwide. The insights provided in the report are essential for informing policy decisions and guiding investments in ICT infrastructure and services. By addressing the digital divide and creating supportive environments for technological innovation, countries can ensure that ICTs contribute to sustainable development and improve the lives of people around the world.
