Global food prices fall in August as cereal output approaches new high
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), anticipation surrounding bumper cereal harvests and increasing volumes of grain inventories are responsible for cheaper global food prices in August. Trends from July’s FAO Food Price Index, responsible for tracking five key commodity prices, show a decline of 1.3 percent. Although this figure represents a decline, the index remained 6 percent above levels from one year earlier. Volumes of global cereal production as well as stocks of cereals are forecast to reach all-time highs through 2018 season’s end. Increasing expectations for higher volumes of wheat, barley and maize production in Russia will offset anticipated downturns in Canada and the United States.
