UN marks Day of the Tropics with focus on region’s vulnerability
According to the United Nations, the most vulnerable areas susceptible to environmental threats exist in the Tropics. The International Day of the Tropics marks, “the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face.” The Tropics stretch from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. Rain is a common unifying characteristic facing all nations within the Tropics. The area is responsible for a little over half of the world’s renewable water supply based on data from the UN. Particular attention to climate change initiatives is essential for ensuring sustainable freshwatersupplies.
