Emigration and food insecurity in Central America ‘dry corridor’ focus of new UN-backed study

 

In a recent inter-agency study examining trends between prolonged droughts, irregular migration, and food insecurity, the UN food relief agency outlined the need for greater investment in long-term programs to deter individuals from emigrating to the United States from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras – countries significantly impacted by the El Niño weather related events from 2014 to 2016. The study determined that family members left behind suffer from outstanding debts associated with those people that attempted to migrate. Often, families resort to emergency measures including the selling of land and farm animals to buy food. Those individuals that attempt migration unsuccessfully lead their families to face even greater debt obligations.
